EEEEM there is risk - when I deskinned my cdp caps (all of them) I did 2 to 4 caps at time, ie started v slowly, so that if there was a problem it would be easily traced. Slow but sure (well as sure as one can be, but one must support the cap). I used a small bladed craft/construction knife with multi section blade that you can break portions off and thus always have a perfectly sharp tip. It seems its necessary to cut through the plastic to the metal can which you can hear when the blade connects - the plastic outer is qite tough, so too much wrestling with it is fraught. It pays to be pulling opposite segments of plastic at the same time. Normally I would make 4 cuts in the plastic outer and often it would come away 'relatively' easily - space can be prohibitive. Cutting/scratching the can surface apparently has no deletarious affect whatsoever other than visual.
I confess I let my guard down with my pre and broke a pcb track - but it was fixed fairly cost effectively.
I've done all the caps in my system, but definitely its not for the faint hearted.
