I'm looking into building a new rack. My reference reading has been Srereophile's article Bad Vibes, and have a few additional questions for more experienced members. Other comments are also very welcomed.
I´m planning to use antivibrational industrial feet with a resonant frequency around 10 Hz, so should isolate vibrations above 20 Hz or so.
The structure has to be as rigid as possible. I'm planning a welded 4-leg tube structure with diagonal beams to provide rigidity on the horizontal plane.
Question #1: is using carbon steel for the structure, which is magnetic, an issue?
Planning to fill the structure with sand.
Bad Vibes argues for a sandwiched structure for the shelves, maybe steel or aluminum on the outer layers and wood or MDF in between. Yet I don't see much discussion about these types in the forum.
Question #2: Should I keep it simple and just make 2"-thick wood shelves?
Question #3: should the connection between the structure and the shelf be rigid (screwed directly) or compliant (pucks)? I can see conceptual benefits for both options, but not sure how material these may be.
Thank you!
