You are right about the piezo crystals. And there are lots of variance within the silicates mentioned, too.
But I don't think you are correct about how Alan's "coating liquid" operates when you say, "...The coating could be something that damps the crystals and electrically insulates it." Unfortunately, I cannot explain the theory to you.
