The chokes are designed to be used as filters in high voltage supplies for tube equipment. The insulation is similar to what is used in power transformers, as they are made by the same company and with the same techniques. Thus, they present no more hazard when used on the AC line than the power transformers in audio gear.
The minimum choke inductance for 120 volts is 5 henrys. This is to limit the 60 Hz current to a low level.
Alan Maher recommended putting the choke connection as close as possible to the audio gear. Using a separate plug will still give you benefit if it is impractical to attach the choke to the gear.
