The Yearbooks On Speakers Tweak

I recently experienced on of those "eureka" tweaking moments. While moving My Spendor S8e speakers I noticed they had screws on the bottom. Tightening those screws cost me nothing and made an incredible difference in tone, detail and bass response. This has caused me to wonder whether there might be some other simple tweaks that would improve the sound of my speakers.

I found a lot of posts suggesting that a weight be placed on top of speakers. I was trying to decide whether to try sand or lead shot or some other exotic subtance when I noticed a post from someone who happened to place some magazines on top of his speakers and noticed a large improvement in sound. In my listening room we have my wife's and my old high school and college year books. I divided them into two stacks weighing about 15 pounds each and placed them on top of my speakers. The improvement in sound was not subtle, more clarity, better tone, deeper bass. This is a tweak everyone should try.

After a few listening session with the yearbooks I tried adding some magazines. There was an improvement in detail, but the speakers sounded more dull. I plan to play around with different weights. Once I find the right weight I will come up with a long term solution.

I also plan to glue some lead weights on to the inside of the bottom of the speakers to add mass without deadening the sound.
