Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |
|
A few days ago I came downstairs and noticed a faint smell somewhat similar to what a dead animal would smell like if left undiscovered for a few months (don't ask me how I know that). I tried to find it, but was unsuccessful, so I turned on the bathroom exhaust fan and forgot about it once it abated.Today I when I tried powering-up the "accessories" in my system, everything was dead. Nothing. No CDP, no tuner, no phono preamp...nothing. I traced it all back to qty (2) Panamax units I have been using for about 10 years (please, no comments as to their usefulness or design), and that I use upstream of all of my low-level sources (all stages of amplification are plugged straight into the wall). I should probably mention I bought these about a year apart from each other....
Here's the question: What are the odds of both of these going dead at exactly the same time, with no damage being done to any of my amps? And there's nothing else in the house that is damaged, either.
Two very dead Panamax units:
I haven't opened them up yet, and to be honest I don't know if I would know what to look for, other than burned parts or places where power goes "in", but doesn't come "out"....
Weird.
