Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

My listening room is in my basement with a 7 foot drop ceiling and 2x2 ceiling tiles. An acoustic calculator indicated that the room node is somewhere in the upper 40s. I recently got new speakers and have been working to get the most out of them. I can hear the room's resonant frequency, which is in the range of some of the drums in a drum kit. Things just didn't sound that great overall. So just awhile ago I was sitting listening and thinking about room treatments when I realized that I could simply remove a couple ceiling tiles and see what effect that has. First I removed 2 in a lateral line about 2.5feet in front of my sitting position. I did this in the middle of a song that had a large amount of room resonance driving me nuts. I went and sat down. And thought I had gone insane.
Resonance about 90% gone. I listened to the remainder of the song, then got up and put it on again (vinyl). As I listened again, sho nuff - resonance almost comletely vanished. So in the middle of the song I again got up and removed one more tile to make 3 in a row. More great results. Then - as the song is still playing, I got up again and displaced a single tile located in the middle point of the line on which the speakers sit, about even with the front port. I sat down again and confirmed that my mind had fallen out of cranium somwhere.
Everything simply opened up dramatically. No more resonance, and with that gone, far more air around the highs, clarity in the mids, everything sounds fast and tight.
So here is my question - does the room node also interfere with other frequencies (either in reality or perceived by the listener)? That is the only explanation I can come up with given this experience. Or am I simply imagining all this??
