I have the MF X10d tube buffer. I like it very much. Got it used with a Radio Shack wall wart and 3 sets of tubes. 2 things I found work well:
1) tube rolling (which probably doesn't apply to your unit)
2) DIYing a much better filtered power supply, which might not be open to you as well.
I have not tried all the cap and diode type replacements, though. I know these will make a difference, just don't work at that level of soldering myself as yet.
As to what you are contemplating, I'm in the dark. Do look at what they do on that Rock Grotto site, though, and it may give you some ideas.
