I don't find my jd-100 particularly loud, but if you do, you can try substituting 5751 tubes for the 12ax7's. 5751s have 70 % of the gain of the stock 12ax7 output tubes, and sound great.
If that is not enough,I would definately attenuate the gain somewhere else in your system rather than the source,--perhaps your amp has excessive input sensititivity, for the preamp's output, your volume pot taper has too much gain at low settings, etc. I find that most preamps have way too much gain for line level sources, especially if your speakers are efficient.
