Hello:
SPDIF should always be transmitted using a true 75 ohm coax that has
been designed for such a purpose. And the coax should be terminated
with true 75 ohm male BNC connectors at both ends. And both a transport
and a DAC should have true 75 ohm female BNC jacks to connect the coax
with. When the SPDIF signal is transmitted and received without the
proper termination (75 ohm), there is a problem with internal reflections
in the connections and cable that will cause jitter, which degrades the sonic performance. That said, there is an audible improvement with the
proper terminations and connections. But it is also true that there
are many transports and DACs that use RCA phono jacks, as well as
poor internal circuitry and the wrong termination values. I replaced
my RCA/RCA SPDIF cable with one that had 75 ohm BNC termination
(DH labs cable), and there was an improvement.
