Telephone wire ga. is 24. ALL four 24 ga. wires equals a total effective gauge of approx. 18. Adding in the copper braid would make it seem larger, but the biggest problem is the insulation used for phone wire: PVC.
There are CAT5 cables that use teflon insulation, and sometimes have a larger gauge wire to start with, and can be braided or bundled up to larger effective gauges.
