It is not just outside the components that need damping....lots of parts inside need damping too. I am really amazed that the tweak community does practically no damping inside the components.....I have been doing this for at least 20 years with good effect. It is not just tubes that can be helped by damping.....but also trasistors, caps, resistors, regulators, heatsinks, transport mechanisms, circuit boards, etc. Damping material is usually not a good dialectric so use the least amount possible when using on most electrical things.I heard one "expert" say that if you damp the outside of a component then you should not damp the inside....and visa versa......what a bunch of bull. If it vibrates, it is adding that sound....plain and simple.
Damping materials can have a "sound" too.....some have the least "sound" and you can also tune to taste and tune to offset distortions elsewhere. And of course, you can "overdamp".....certainly an art, like most high end things.
