RS solder is OK, but it doesn't flow anywhere as easily as good quality WBT solder or similar higher grade stuff. That makes a big difference!
Also, the wattage of the iron is a big factor. While hotter means it heats faster and things seem to flow more easily (I like the 40 W), it can also damage parts faster! So there is a practice and a tool to job matching factor here. They're pretty cheap to buy at RS, so I have 2 different irons to play with and all the necessary tools are just a small expenditure.
Still and all, this soldering thing, which I found intimidating at first, isn't all that hard to to with a little practice.
