Basic Electronics Question

I want to begin re-capping a Soundcraft mixing board. I've been reading on various recording forums much advice on improvements to the board by changing some values of the caps. This is fine but in some cases people have mentioned terms like (add a 22pF cap across R63) What does it mean to add a cap "across" another component? Here is another instruction I've received (The 4.7 uf bipolar is replaced with a Wima MKS-2 bypassed with a .01 MKP-2.) What doe sit mean to bypass something?
