I recently had exactly the same problem. The Near 10M work wonderfully in this application, and Audio Advisor has them on sale for $250/pr.If you really do want to build them, you'll need to toe them in a lot to compensate for the wide speaker placement relative to your listening position, so look for a nice driver with a non-fatiguing on-axis response. I'd go for two-way, buy coaxial would work as well. Tannoy has a line of fairly expensive studio monitors that are all built using coaxial drivers, and they're highly regarded.
