I am convinced most of the cost of speakers is in the labor to make the cabinets. Really good, resonant-free cabinets take a lot of time and effort to manufacture. High-end speakers will have 2-3 inch thick baffles and rear panels and multiple internal braces. Cabinet side walls will be lined with damping materials. Good crossovers will have VERY expensive capacitors and inductors (for example, some of the better capacitors will cost $20-$30 each). Bose et.al simply will not put in the effort or cost because the average Joe audio buyer doesn't care - he just wants speakers with overbloated bass that can be cranked up really loud. One recommendation would be to buy a kit that includes cabinet plans as well as all components. Speaker design is an art, and it is rare that one gets it right on the first try.
