If you are new to loudspeaker design (and mentioning using a premade crossover makes it look so), then I recommend trying a kit before designing your own system. Go to www.madisound.com and check out the kits they have. Anything your heart desires from below $200 to well over $2000 is available in kit form.Building a loudspeaker requires considering many things, not just frequency response and sensitivity. A kit allows you to benefit from what others have found to be successful but still saves you considerable money. For what you'd spend on a commercial pair of loudspeakers, you can get MUCH more by simply assembling it yourself.
For a really cheap pair of nice bookshelf speakers, try the Sledging. For a great value, try a Vifa kit. If you want it all and money's not an issue, get a Dynaudio kit.
If you're really interested in knowing HOW to build your own loudspeakers, get a copy of The Loudspeaker Design Cookbook.
