I bought an Arcam FMJ-A22 integrated from a seller in the UK who promised me that it had a toggle switch on the back that would allow it to run on N. American voltage.
It doesn't. Arcam's FMJ line, as it happens, is produced as two completely separate sets of gear, designed with two completely separate voltages in mind, and aren't switchable between the two.
To his credit the seller apologized profusely and offered to either pay for a shipping return and full refund, or express-ship me a portable transformer that would jump my North American 115 up to UK 230. The transformer arrived today and so I promptly took it out of the box and plugged it in and hooked up my amp.
I was stunned at how harsh and brittle -- almost abrasive -- the sound was, and I'm wondering: is this because the transformer has to be "broken in," or is something else wrong?
