AFAIKnow the VR head amp is THE BEST active step-up ever made! If you believe Stereophile and TAS!
About as NICE sounding as any made, and far QUIETer.
I'm also pretty sure that it IS a current-sensing device - like MC step-ups should be.
A pair of very BIG triple-shielded SUT's might get within 6db on the noise front, and be noticeably nicer. But not tiddlers that can fit inside a pre, IMO&E!
So my advice is to stick with the VR! Is it all that crowded on your shelf? Then get a double-layer shelf!
NB It IS possible to build an SS step-up / tubed MM RIAA hybrid that is as good noise-wise using low current-noise multi (paralleled) BP transistors on chips. BUT they will still be BP's, audibly. Merlin Audio built us a prototype one way back, and it just wasn't quite, quite, ya know!? Even with REAL care on the supply side!
The only way IMO to get better results would be to build a 'fully balanced' SS current sensing phono stage into two twin triodes in a balanced mu-follower mode - line level stage- for 'low-output-Z' / long-cable drive, with a trimmable CSS under each valve - for some QUIET tubiness.
IME balanced phono stages are nearly always a breakthrough on the nuances, dynamics, and noise front. Even just doubling up the old RCA twin 12AX7 circuit and trimming each one to MATCH!!! A good 6db minimum S/N improvement and explosive dynamics!
IMO the ONLY place where balanced really FITS in home audio.
