If you go over to DIYAudio forums, there's a gainclone (chip amp) forum, and those guys have tried everything.  I got some good advice over there.
One of the things I was told pretty universally was that all the chips sound essentially identical; the devil is in the details of implementation, and that the big chips can just operate at higher volts/amps, and so can give more power. The little LM1875, which is what I have, can give about 20 watts into a normal speaker load, so it'll probably do you. None of them like low impedence loads by the way; keep your speaker load up at 8Ω.
