dampening means makening somethening wet

Once in a while we must bare our frailties.
One of my many is a peculiar twitch I get in my right eyelid when folks use the term "dampening".

The term for the gradual reduction of the amplitude of oscillation to zero by friction is damping.

The second law of motion (F=ma) can be used to describe the motion of a damped, not dampened, simple harmonic oscillator, in which case F is the sum of two components, -kx, a.k.a. the restoring force, and - (b)dx/dt, a.k.a. the damping, not dampening, force. This sum will be equal to
(m)d2x/dt2. b is a positive constant which goes to 0 if no friction is present and the oscillator is not damped.

From what I can gather from a Random House Dictionary, dampening an oscillator might make it wet.

Apologies for bearing my soul.
