I just installed the $250 Room Tunes kit, it worked wonders on controlling the bass in my L shaded room of 14x25x8 high. I simply could not imagine (and wouldn't enjoy) a room filled with thick panels and corners filled with bass traps - not inviting to me & crazy expensive (as you found out). This kit is small, hides from view easily & is much cheaper than most routes I looked into. You can find the adds for this kit on Audiogon, just search Room Tunes or Michael Green Audio. Eighth Nerve also has a similar kit.
If you're room is not treated whatsoever, you are in for a HUGE shock once you install a system to control the room. you get WAY more than you bargain for with proper acoustic treatment. $ very well spent in my limited experience.
