Half of the crossover is built into the sub. That part is the low pass portion of the x-over and it sounds fine. The other half is the in line high pass part and I guess you could say that it can muddy up things but it is more of a loss of overall clarity that I hear due to the use of a low quality filter. When you say muddy it up it makes me think you are needing a bit more experimenting before you build the new filter so you can get the value right from the start.It sounds to me like you have some other set up issues that may need to be addressed before you are going to get the best performance from your sub even with a new high performance filter.
This sub can perform very well if attention to detail in it's set up is followed.
