HowdyI think Clark's point is more subtle: there are any number of albums/tapes/discs out there (many of which were recorded long before the AES standard) with varying polarities. Some vary from studio to studio, some from track to track in an album, and some even have differing polarities between say the singers and the instruments in a given track.
Given that one wants to listen to what one has, and if you are polarity sensitive and your system doesn't render polarity switching moot (e.g. with out of polarity drivers in the speakers) the only choice you have is a polarity switch somewhere in your system. I.e. it really doesn't matter if your system preserves absolute polarity, you'll need a switch anyway.
Of course Steve (and others) are correct that polarity of the input to the power supply of a device has nothing whatsoever to do with the audio polarity preserving properties of that device and that bringing up audio absolute polarity on this thread was confusing at best.
