Sand's supposed to have the effect that vibrations of at least some frequencies get damped by grains of sand moving against each other, and hence turned into heat. I don't know of anyone who's measured the effect, but what the hell it's cheap to build. Solid wood can't do that trick. Re framing, given that the sides of your box will be damped by the pressure of the sand and the relevant energies are small to begin with (we're not building speaker cabinets), I would just go with whatever will look nice and is easy to build.Experiment with whatever you have or can scrounge for free -- chopping boards, pieces of stone or wood, whanot.
