Don't know whether cones are better up or down, I use Nordost Pulsar points which are a 2-piece cup / cone design and they are highly effective on my CD player and amp.I can recommend another relatively inexpensive tweek which makes a massive diffrence. I use 20mm thick granite plinth with sorbothane feet below all my components (on an Alphason steel / glass rack).
The difference the granite plinths make is phenomenal...the improvement in sound quality greatly outweighs the cost (go to a stone fireplace supplier for your granite slabs...they will cut them to the exact size of your components).
