To remove the grill cloth you must first remove the stands and turn the speaker over and then remove the screws on the bottom of the cabinet. Using some long wide screwdrivers or strong putty knives you can wedge them into the section between the grill cloth and the bottom plate. Once you remove the bottom plate you can get access to the grill cloth which is held down by what seems to be half a million staples. After removing the staples and removing the screws holding the speaker binding posts you can then pull the grill cloth (a sock) up and out of the way. .The Vandersteen grill cloth is extremely thick so the highs will become noticeably more prominent. If you are really careful you can insert the screw drivers between the top plate and the grill cloth. Be aware that there are dowels inserted to center the top plate. If you are very careful you can pry the top plate off. This works better with older speakers where the glue has hardened and is no longer soft. Vandersteen does sell replacement grill cloths and top plates, however. He doesn't take kindly to those who muck up his speakers. Tell him your 80 pound pet wildcat got to them.....8^.
Actually the speakers bare show a lot of unfinished work: staples and nails are visible and the fit up of some pieces and the felt leave the cosmetics a bit to be desired.
I've often though a few hours of filler and sanding and application of a textured paint could hide the majority of the blemishes. If you take off the top plate you can use the old grill as a pattern and sew a new grill using lighter more transparent material and retain the airier quality a naked driver can give. While you're at it change the screws to something non metallic and you'll get a much more open soundstage. Other than that you'll have to internal for mods.
