I DIY because it's the cost effective way to test the principles, like you, but also because I don't have the bucks to spend on the high priced spread. Sooooo, I've got you 2 to 1 there. ROTFLDavid's journey of discovery keeps me informed and amused. Overall, when I try to figure out the basic theory, I'm only right half the time. My ability to visualize ALL the physical properties and permutations doesn't match reality based reality in real life...ahem. Judging by all the posts here and all the manufacturers' claims, I'm about as right as the rest, though.
What I've found is that some isolation and some coupling works well together. Depends on so many factors. Generally, good isolation through elastomers or air seems to work well with my system in the vertical dimension, but horizontally or rotationally it doesn't. It's the converse for rotational or horizontal - coupling seems to work best.
But I'm still trying to get a definitive answer on the "draining" vibes concept: Is it true, half true, or all false? Draining would presume that you can suck out the bad vibes in a chosen direction if manipulated while not necessarily channeling back what you don't want in the opposite direction. You can see that this is somewhat unlikely. So how and why and when to utilize a hard coupling of what dimension or shape gets quite complicated. Draining theory doesn't seem to do the job in predicting the sonic impact for me.
