Re: Close nit fabric sound absorption loss?

With the thicker more closed cloths, especially velour, what happens is that the upper mids and HFs can be reflected off of the cloth, more so at steep angles of incidence (where the sound waves are not coming head on to the cloth). This is not much of a problem for bass absorption, but CAN become a problem when trying to use the panels/traps as a full range absorber.

I have to say, most folks would be amazed at how much energy is reflected at mid and HFs from cloths, esp. the heavier/thicker ones. Velour used to be a favorite as a cheap home studio fabric, due to the thought that it absorbed HF's better due to the small amount of 'plushness' the fabric has, but many studio folks are now aware that this is a false perception.

Instead of burlap, speaker grille cloth can be use, or other fabrics specifically designed for such use, such as the Acoustone line, or the various Guilford models (Guilford FR701 is used by many of the pro companies). However, both the Acoustone and Guilford are not cheap, and may have minimum order quantities, or a premium cost for small amounts.

If all you want is bass absorption, then don't worry about it, but at least be aware of the issues, in case it causes problems with the acoustics.
