You're worried about spike holes, but . . .

. . . you're going to end up with permanent depressions in the carpeting where you site your proposed stands.

As others have said, the spikes pierce the carpeting and couple to the floor below; unless the pile is incredibly thin, you'll never see the spike holes.

I'm a high-mass-stand kind of guy. I currently use concrete pillars (bird bath pillars, actually) with spikes on the bottoms piercing a carpeted floor. The spike marks don't show, but if I had just put the pillars directly on the carpet, it would look like a moonscape by now!

FYI, the best results for me came from using a mastic substance (like blu-tak, but the 79-cent variety ;-) ) between the stands and the speakers, not spikes.
