If it's standard wall-to-wall carpet, spikes just go through to the subfloor and leave no visible holes when you remove them.

Your box is a fine idea and lets you choose the speaker height you want. You could just fill it with sand and rest an MDF panel atop the sand. But unless the carpet is real thin, you may find that unless you put spikes on the bottom of the *box*, it'll rock back and forth and side to side when you put it on the carpet and put the speaker atop the box.
