I had to choose between a similar material and Atacama's Atabites, a much coarser steel fill made from wire shavings earlier this year. I went for the Atabites based on cost but I too have been wondering. There may well be a cheaper alternative. Sand blasting places offer a steel blasting fill that appears to be the same sort of grain size and shape, and it looks considerably cheaper by the 25 lb bag. I wonder whether Star Sound and the firm who put out the similar product I was shown are simply repackaging a commonly available blasting product and selling it in a different market.
Check out the sand blasting suppliers in your locality and see if that gives you a cheaper alternative.
