You don't need a Metcal for occasional use. A temperature controlled tip is fine, and I used a Weller a or Hakko with good results. Current Weller production tips suck so be sure to have extras around. I prefer the 700 degree tips.
When using the lead free on NOS parts (read old and oxidized leads) I sometimes will tin the leads with Cardas, WBT, or Sn 62, and then use the lead free to join the parts. It saves a lot of cold joints and the greif that accompanies such joints.
Switching to the lead free was a revelation. Just sucking out the solder off an old RCA plug on an interconnect and replacing it with lead freee solder was instantly noticeable. Highs were extended and detail enhanced. The sound remained bright for about 8 hours of play then settled down and the sense of detail started extended downward into the mids and bass. I actually strained my thumb using a soldapull and replaced all the solder in my component's circuit board. Again the increase in fine detail and the trailing notes of the music was significant.
AS usual YMMV
