The Eutectic solders mentioned are great for ease of flow and for working with oxidized surfaces. Sonically I find the lead free stuff is much better, and I have been using them for the past 6 years. They are a bitch to work with and I find I need to use external flux consistently, they eat up tips constantly, and they have a lot of wetting issues. Worse yet they look like a cold solder joint, no matter how hard you try. Definitely not a solder for the inexperienced or with lesser irons (I now use a Metcal). Sound is significantly improved however: way more detail and ambience comes through.
SN 96 is my favorite: 96% tin and 4% silver. The tin/copper alloys have a trace less top end, but still sound significantly clearer. I still use Wonder. WBT, Audio Quest and Multicore Sn 62, but only for repair work. As a DBT by mistake, I once did a repair on one channel of a preamp without thinking about the solder and the customer came back after a week and asked me to repair the other channel which didn't sound as good as the repaired side......Stu
