Tweakers' Asylum Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ. |

Hello once again. Hopefully I'm posting this in the right forum... I'm not even sure if I need it, but I'm now looking into power conditioning/filtering/surge protection for my equipment. I'm not entirely sure how clean the power is to my house, but I'd imagine it wouldn't be THAT bad considering the house is less than fifteen years old, and in a pretty well to do neighborhood. I notice that lights do dim on occasion, either for no apparent reason or if a major appliance like the dishwasher is in use. Also, with my amp (I'm a headphone guy...its a Gilmore GS-1 headamp) which is supposed to be dead silent, I can hear a little background hum/static when I turn the volume pot up pretty high (while having both it and my source turned on), without having any music playing. This hum/static goes away after I unplug the interconnects. I guess it's more than likely my source somehow causing the hum/static at VERY high volumes. So if I'm to look for a starter power conditioning device, what would you guys recommend (under $200 new or used)? I've found a used Monster Powerbar 1100 for a decent price that I might snag; but I worry that it will limit dynamics (seems to me I read somewhere Monsters restrict dynamics). Or am I better off continuing to save for say a Shunyata Hydra 2, BPT Jr (do they even make these anymore), PS Audio Outlet, etc (only have use for two outlets anyway...one for my source, a modded Music Hall CD-25, and my headamp, a Gilmore GS-1). I just want the peace of mind that my equipment is safe, as well as having my power as clean as can be, for a reasonable price. Thanks people!
