They were simply a resonance damping device. Ric Cummins suggests using some granite in this application now that Dark Matter products are no longer available. He also suggested using perforated steel around outer edges of the speaker magnet as an additional effective tweak. I haven't tried this yet myself. He recommended perforated steel that is 50%-60% open. IIRC, he suggested wrapping the outer edge of the magnet with sorbothane, then the steel, followed by plastic cinch ties to hold the whole business in place.
