Well, I went to IKEA and built these racks. I couple of observations. Get the wood finished more expensive tables. As mentioned before, the legs on these are solid chip board. You'll need something like formica chips beneath the spikes otherwise the spikes WILL dig into the surface of the table. I glued the formica pieces down in each corner with a liquid gasket maker, which does not really cure. Stays quite flexible forming I guess what you could call a constrained layer damper. Do not use legs with excessive length as this increases instability big time. I'd say no more than 12" and less height per shelf is better, as in 8" or less. Also, I would recommend against going as high as 5' in height overall - she'll sway quite a bit on you. These things RESONATE big time. So, drill the holes in the bottoms of the table tops and inject your insulation. I did this last night so I'm not sure how it will work out. However, my bet is that I'll still need to isolate gear from the table tops. Also, use plumber's teflon tape on your threaded spikes. This makes a snug and quiet fit of your screws in the T-nuts.Even if this thing fails, I'd say it was a worthwhile learning experience and it didn't cost much. Although, grinding the spikes with a drill mounted grinding wheel was a bit of a PITA!
Let's hope she works...
Oh yes, drill your holes for insulation foam at the same diameter of the little hose from the insulation can. You can keep it quite clean by getting yourself some pencils and cutting down little temporary plugs. Pull your hose out and insert pencil plug. Leave yourself enough pencil protruding so you can pull it out with a pair of pliers. Trust me, you'll need the pliers.
Be advised, this rack will NOT allow you to walk heavily or jump around the room. Upset the rack in anyway and your tone arm will be a movin' and a shakin'. I found myself being quite careful around the rack. I'm going to lower the height to see if it makes any difference.
I'll let you know how it sounds. I can tell right off that things have changed in sound quality. I just don't know yet if it's for better or for worse - my initial hunch is for the better. Hopefully, I'll get this thing completely finished by tomorrow for some critical listening.
Jim
