I have sold high end audio for many years. I have also sold high end measuring scales to scientists for years. Guess what? The two have a lot in common.Your speaker is measuring the current in your wires/amplifier/preamplifier/source chain..... So what you need to do is to provide the most stable platform for it to measure from.
I would use a stand with spikes. The reason. Whatever mass you have in the stand and speaker is concentrated on 3 to 4 points only a millimeter or so in total surface area. So you take the weight, and divide by the surface area and you have the pounds per inch for your set up.
The reason to use kitty litter, sand, concrete, or lead shot is to create more mass, and provide vibration control. Many tests conclusively show that small lead shot, like used in shot gun shells makes the best vibration control. Mix this with sand and you have an affordable loading for your stands.
On my set up, I have spikes on the base of the stand and spikes on the top of the stand. I then go to 3 marble tiles from home depot. 5 bucks each with layers of silicone or pure butyl rubber. Then spikes on the bottom of my speakers to the marble.
Send me an email and I will send you pictures.
This both loads and decouples. It absorbs resonance and gives the drivers the ability to accurately measure the current of your electronics.
Get it!
I would pour a 20 ton plug of concrete from bearing soil to my speakers if it were practical. But it is of course impractical.....such is the dillemma of high end audio.
The speaker spikes are critical to helping you get the rake angle right for the speaker set up. Email me and I will send you my speaker set up protocol I was teached. I attended a two day class just on setting up stereo speakers and subwoofers. And what I learned in 2 days has been more important to high quality sound than any single investment in electronic gagets.
Hope this helps or at least fuels some response.
Tweeking is best when done with a clear mind, a fertile mind, and a never mind the bs approach to life.
Cheers.
