Re: Black gate caps and vishay bulk foil resistors

I second the recommendation to get a schematic. Then, you can be more rational and strategic in your tweaking. In the signal path, you might use a good film and foil (e.g., RelCaps, Auricaps) or a nonpolar Blackgate. In the power supply, Nichicon KG Golds have worked very well for me. Others like Panasonic THSA and THSB in the power supply. In the rectfier, FRED diodes or Schottkys (watch the voltage and current specs) can really clean things up.

If you are serious, change only one part at a time, and listen for a long time between tweaks. Blackgates can take at least 100 hours to break in (the sonic changes during cap breakin can be surprisingly large), so--PAY ATTENTION NOW--you must tweak slowly and listen for a long time between changes. If you put in ten parts the first night and six the next night, twelve the following night, the sonic trajectory over the time it takes all those parts to settle down will be entirely unpredictable, and you will end up chasing your tail bigtime and will finally sell the thing cheap on e-bay or you will give it to your sister. I found this out the hard way.

BTW, I hear large effects from good caps in the signal path and the power supply and from diodes in the power supply. I have used botique resistors and (with my system, my room, my ears, my attention span) generally don't hear a large change. For the most part, I use Xicon 1% metal film resistors (Mouser) or Roedersteins from Michael Percy.

Good luck, have fun,
Peter
