Your story is a sad one, but with a (somewhat) happy ending.The importance of good solder joints with strong mechanical connection is a must! This seems to be only a portion of "Audio Clown's" faults. Certainly lying to the customer is another. Incompetance and laziness aren't far behind.
There are plenty of so-called tech schools releasing "qualified" technicians with little real life experience and marketable skills. This makes it tougher on the techs that actually DO know their stuff.
The good news is that you kept a clear head and fixed the problem yourself. Congrats!
