Try this: with the system off and everything else quiet, stand near your listening chair and near the speakers and clap your hands. If you hear a long, metallic-sounding "twang" in response, then you have slap-echo and you will not be able to audition, let alone enjoy, audio components.There is no cheap fix. The hard surfaces have to be covered with things with suitable absorbtion properties. Jon Risch has a lot of good advice on his web site about avoiding superficial treatments that make the room sound boomy.
