I would have said that diffusion helps with early reflections because, by spreading the energy reflected over a wider area, it reduces the intensity of that portion of the diffused reflection reaching your ear. Diffuse the sound over twice the area and you reduce the intensity of that part of the reflection reaching your ear by half also. In other words, both diffusion and absorption reduce the level of the reflection for you, but absorption reduces it faster.Diffusion has other advantages but it also takes space and time in which to develop diffusion. My preference would be to rely on absorption for the earliest reflections and use diffusion to break up later reflections.
