I've got a suspended plywood floor over crawl space, so that is probably why I like the shelfless approach.No matter how well damped shelves are, though, they create cavities in a stacked arrangement. If a component placed between two parallel surfaces has a resonance near a mode of the cavity, then there could be a problem.
Agree that care and attention to detail are important in either approach.
