Home Tweakers' Asylum

Tweaks for systems, rooms and Do It Yourself (DIY) help. FAQ.

This is what I was just advised.

You are just as well off with a wooden, PVC, or non-ferrous metal box as with a metal box. Also, you need to acoustically damp the thin metal box somehow. But there's nothing wrong with the box you describe either. In fact, it's about the size I'm looking for for the same project.

I went to Home Despot, my favorite ruler of my life, and looked at metal and PVC boxes, since most "project boxes" at electronics stores are rather pricey for what they are. HD had a 6X6X6 PVC box, easy to work with ordinary PVC glue and fittings. About $13, and I think I'm going for that one. Metal boxes tend to be more expensive and I'm told you have to be far more careful about grounding if its basically steel. (Outdoor boxes can be cast aluminum, but these are even pricier and not in convenient sizes.) PVC is far less resonant than metal, so it may be a better choice.

Ask inmate Al Sekela for his advice on this. He's guiding me well... Same project. Good luck to both of us!
