Re: conrad johnson PV2 (early eighties vint.)upgrades ?

Most of my circuit updates were to bring an early pre-PV1 to a PV-2aRevised machine. A base of an oversized one-eighth inch aluminum panel attached on top of a duron hardboard panel attached on top of a one-half inch gator polystyrene panel provided a lower noise floor and reduced a 60/120 Hz hum (being picked up from a power amp transformer field a few feet away) by more than 3 dB. Found no difference when soldering in different power cords / ground schemes. Nice improvement by cleaning up power source with a dedicated system 120V circuit, hospital grade wall outlet, and a well-publicized power strip bought for 75% off. Have not yet played with tube dampers but am listening to changes (most good) with circuit / transformer shield schemes. The stock volume control (ALPs) is one of the best and cleaned up nicely. Use a zero residual tuner cleaner, I minimize freon use because of floride/chloride interactions with brass/copper structure, and NEVER use WD-40. Also playing with subtle sonic changes with maple cased lead shot on top of the case. Biggest improvement, however, came from trial and error tube rolling. Had to repair one tube socket so be gentle with your machine.
