Hi Barry,
Thanks for the comments. Hope my post wasn't misleading - I was not singling out Hip Joints or trying to imply that they are in any way unethical. The people who have responded to this thread have made excellent points. The more I get involved in the audio community, the more I am able to meet the people who are actually designing and marketing some products. Since I am a pretty handy person, it doesn't take long before my brain starts trying to figure out how they work, why they work, and of course, that leads to DIY. So I think my post spoke a lot to these personal experiences. I would not want to discourage people from diligently working on R&D for these products. However, a good simple concept is not exactly theft - especially if I tweak and improve it a bit with my own ideas.
Yes, got the designs for Hip Joints earlier this year. Spoke with a local machinist to have them made up - got decent prices, and for a time, considered doing a group buy here on AA. It seemed like a logistical nightmare, so I cooled on the idea. Right now I am pursuing non-metal isolation ideas - rubber, plastic, etc. I will most likely have some Hip Joints made up some day, but not just yet.
Sorry the group buy didn't work out, even if i wasn't planning on participating. Its nice to see the community try to work together for the common good!
