Coating the entire plate (or as much of it as is practical) with Blu-tak? Unless the speakers were designed with the resonance of the aluminum plate in mind, which I doubt, it would make sense to me to damp it as much as possible. Good sense doesn't always equal good sound, though, which is why experimenting is so vital. Good sense is not always what we think it is, too.I've read about you and others using various tuning dots to great effect, so I don't doubt their effectiveness. What I don't have a handle on is their value, which is why I'm curious as to how other materials perform in comparison.
BTW - I seemed to have very good luck damping the plastic plates in my B&W speakers with Mortite, but I made other tweaks while I was in there, so all I can do is guess at the effectiveness based on how the plate felt and sounded when struck before and after the tweak. Eventually I'll yank the crossovers out of there, replace the internal wiring (some of which will become external, obviously), and plug the hole with something much more rigid than plastic - yes, these are only 600 series B&W's with all the associated compromises.
Tweak on,
Pete
