wringing gremlins out of the Micro Utopia Be

Man, that aluminum plate at the rear of the cabinet is a major p.i.t.a. First round was the VTS 32 mm 4 ply superdot just about dead ceter above the posts. Took away much lower end confusion and gave the much sought after, elusive "bass air". Took the Utopias down again and gave each a 8 piece RF-57 treatment on the plate. The way they set them up the center of the plate has the problem tones where the edges and corners are fairly well dampped. If you rap in the center you get a dis-musical "thaaaawk" that has just got to be trouble. So I lined up the RF-57s in a row down the center and two sideways to form a cross below the terminals, where the resonance is extra loud and off. Turned on some Horowitz/Scarlatti, even at lower volumes Vlad's piano has a chime, realism that wasn't there, there is now a sense of the felt of the hammers as well as the strings, and the cavity of the piano as parts of the musical gestalt, both clearer and less bright. The slight differences in the exact tuning of the piano strings create slight beat frequencies, I think the best tuners do this on purpose with the finest touch to create an almost subliminal vibrato that causes the notes to project. This inner life of the music had gone missing before, the other great strengths of the Be design notwithstanding.
