Couldn't you just connect the grounds to their respective chasis.Not necessarily. Depending on the piece of gear, the audio reference ground may be tied to the chassis through resistors, diodes, RC networks, etc. or it may not have any connection at all to the chassis. And even if the audio reference ground is tied directly to the chassis, a chassis connection may not be the best point for grounding the interconnects from a noise standpoint.
