I have a Harmon Kardon Citation V tube amp (early 60s) that I am planning on modding at some point soon. I know the amp work (or worked) because I played it for a while, several days at a time, over a couple of months. I've gotten around to putting a three prong grounded cable (Venhaus design) on the amp (it was two prong before.) Connected the ground to transformer screw, the hot to a black cable that comes out of the power transformer and goes to a fuse, and the white (neutral) to the other brown cloth cable coming out of the power transformer. Put on the wall plug, then pulled out the mulitmeter to make sure all is fine. Well, it seems that the hot and neutral are connected (making that fun whine when I touch the neutal and hot male prongs.) A short in the cable is ruled out, as I desoldered the neutral. Using the multimeter, I touched the black cable from the power transformer (hot) and the other cable (brown cloth covered) and sure enough, the whine that means a connection (short) between the two. Could this be part of the amp design? (it did work before.) Seems wronnnnnng.... a recipie for "kaboom" if I plug it in. What could have happened? Could I have put too much heat on one of the wire, sending it down the wire and maybe melting somewhere in the transformer, thus giving me a very expensive paper weight (anybody got a HK Citation V power transformer they can spare?)I'm going to email HK expert Jim McShane on this one as well, I'm bummed, wanted to have the amp up tonight.
